Translation of the Russian original of 1956, reviewed in MR0087740 (19,402c). A German translation appeared in 1962 [MR0150301 (27 #302)]. {Reviewer's remarks: The transliteration and recognition of some Western names apparently offered certain difficulties; for example, Tornehave's name is misspelled wherever it appears in Chapter VI (although it is correctly given in the bibliography), Matison's name is misspelled wherever it occurs (except in the bibliography), and the name V. Ganapathy Iyer is given in the text as V. G. Iyer (which does not exist in the bibliography) and is misspelled in the bibliography.
