This thought-provoking book is an introductory text for topology, with a strong emphasis on manifolds and on basic algebraic topology. Part I provides ample material for a one-semester or two-quarter course at the undergraduate or beginning graduate level. It includes basic point-set topology, the classification of surfaces, and the fundamental group. Part II, the remainder of a graduate-level course, treats the theory of covering spaces, CW-complexes, and homology.
Stylistically, it is very much a teaching text, as opposed to a reference work. Numerous exercises, both within the exposition as well as at the ends of sections, ask the student to fill in details of assertions. In the later chapters, some sections consist mostly of long lists of exercises and statements of theorems that they prove. (MathSciNet)
