The book is useful to senior or graduated students as well as to researchers of other fields interested in hyperbolic partial differential equations. The first part of the book discusses the Cauchy problem for vector fields, method of characteristics, differential operators or systems in plane, quasilinear scalar equations and eikonal equations. The second part is devoted to the wave equation and its perturbations for two or three space dimensions. Many exercises illustrating particular topics are proposed, so that the book may be used as a textbook. The author often uses geometrical explanations of problems instead of tedious mathematical proofs. (Zentralblatt)
