This is the first monograph on multivariate Birkhoff interpolation. Its main purpose is to determine whether an interpolation problem, given by the derivatives to be interpolated and by the interpolation space, is solvable for almost all choices of the nodes. The author investigates multivariante interpolation using a technique developed by G. G. Lorentz and himself. The results achieved up to the present, which were primarily concerned with bivariate interpolation, are presented in the multivariate form and extended to new results. In addition the techniques of this approach is brought to bear to other approaches to multivariate interpolation and to concrete examples. As an appendix, a useful bibliography on multivariate interpolation is provided. (Zentralblatt)
