This book is devoted to control theory and, in particular, to the numerical analysis and simulation of control problems involving partial differential equations (PDE). ... The book is also full of bibliographical comments and indications of important open problems and future subjects of research. Therefore it can be used by experienced researchers, beginners, or those interested in teaching an introductory master course on numerics and control of PDE, with important applications in mind. Actually each of the three parts of the book, devoted to diffusion, waves and flow control problems, respectively, could serve as a primary text of an independent course. The textbook can be read as a whole, but it can also be easily used in a piecewise manner, with a reader going directly to the chapters and sections he or she is most interested in.
The book definitely has the perfume of those that Lions wrote during his prolific career. My congratulations to his two coworkers for having completed this task that remained incomplete when he passed away in 2001. This book definitely fills a gap in the existing literature on control and numerics of PDE, and I am sure it will influence future research in this area. (MathSciNet)
