This is an excellent textbook on advanced topics in Hamiltonian dynamics, chaotic behaviour and nonlinear oscillations. Several improvements to the first edition have been made and, in particular, some aspects of dissipative systems are reviewed as well. However, the accent is still clearly on the Hamiltonian case. The chapters which constitute the core of the work are well organized and balanced between general theory and examples (both analytical and numerical). Although many results from other authors are presented in their original derivations, a few cases are explicitly studied for this book. The new parts concerning dissipative systems are mainly introductory and the interested reader should consult more specialized books. The bibliography is also more accurate for what concerns Hamiltonian dynamics. The level of presentation is well suited to physicists and engineers, whereas mathematicians may find it elementary in some cases. (MSN)
