The book consists of a one-semester course designed to illustrate, at an elementary level, how mathematical models of biological phenomena can be developed. The examples chosen range from the classical deterministic and stochastic models of the spread of epidemics to introductory treatments of more specialized topics such as the eradication of schistosomiasis and the transmission of gonorrhea. The presentation is refreshingly clear, though the analysis would have carried greater force if it had been supported by rather more data. Each chapter concludes with a selection of examples. (MSN)
