The book consists of 8 chapters: Properties of the collision operator, The Boltzmann equation near the vacuum, The Boltzmann equation near the equilibrium, The Vlasov-Poisson system, The Vlasov-Maxwell system, Dilute collisionless plasmas, Velocity averages: weak solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell system, Convergence of a particle method for the Vlasov-Maxwell system.
The largest chapter is on the Boltzmann equation near the equilibrium (1/3 of the whole book). The reason for that is the large number of mathematical results for this model. In addition this theory has existed for a sufficiently long time to be free of the unnecessary technical machinery of first proofs, which makes it suitable for book presentation. The exposition goes along a traditional line established in papers of Ukai, and the author skillfully points out essential difficulties (cf. "dot'' spaces which solve the problem of continuity of certain semigroups) ... (MSN)
