With the Stokes formula in filigree, this book is an excursion into the mundane world of mathematicians, with an emphasis on some darker aspects of the profession, especially in the French milieu, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century: jealousy, rivalry, mandarins, misogyny, etc. It is clear from the outset (at least it seems so to the reviewer) that the author is describing syndromes which she has experienced.
Although the book is declared to be a novel (Roman), the characters are mathematicians, still living in our mathematical literature, and any image projected on each of them must be treated with care. ... (MSN)
