Bibliogr. p. XI-XVII
This volume contains 36 papers by Shōkichi Iyanaga written in the period 1928–1991 in European languages, as well as some papers published here for the first time. Most of the earlier papers are devoted to class field theory; others concern different branches of mathematics (group theory, topology, geometry). Some papers are of a historical and biographical nature. In particular, they concern mathematical life in Europe in the early 1930s, the meeting of the Bourbaki group in 1954, and contain personal reminiscences of Jean Delsarte, Taira Honda, Claude Chevalley, Mikio Sato, Zyoiti Suetuna, Teiji Takagi and Hua Loo Keng.
At the end of the volume there are comments by the author explaining under what circumstances each of the papers had been written. These comments and other historical information contained in the volume give a very important and interesting review of the development of mathematical life in Japan during the XXth century.
Personal reminiscences make up the most exciting part of the volume, and can be read with great pleasure and interest by every mathematician (MSN)
