This monograph, based on the work of the author and his collaborators, gives a very elegant and readable account of many important results in the theory of packings and coverings, lattice as well as non-lattice. The author has managed in most cases to include proofs of best known results without affecting the readability of this book, which is entirely self-contained. Although the main text deals with estimates from above and below for the densities of best lattice and general packings and coverings for a set K, where K is an n-dimensional convex body, sphere or simplex and n is large, the introduction contains a lucid and complete survey of the present knowledge of many other problems also. Because of the many unsolved problems in the field, this introduction is very valuable. The introduction is supplemented by an exhaustive bibliography. It may be worth remarking that the bibliography contains references to more than 125 contributions between the years 1944 and 1964 by more than forty mathematicians. ... (MathSciNet)
