This book is a text for a second-year graduate course on compact Lie groups and their representations. The treatment of the latter is quite thorough, and the most important examples arising from the classical groups are presented in considerable detail. This material and other classical topics are developed in modern terminology and in a clear, methodical, and accessible manner. One notable omission is an account of the exponential equivalence between Lie algebras and Lie groups. As the authors note, this is needed to complete the account of the structure theory in Chapter V, Section 8. However, this material is peripheral to the main themes of the book. The exercises in this book are excellent, and in particular they contain a wealth of very helpful information about specific examples. Aside from its usefulness as a text, the book is also an extremely good reference for a large body of important classical material translated into current terminology. (MathSciNet)
