"Emphasizing the geometric rather than the axiomatic approach to algebraic topology, this book shows the importance of topological concepts by applying them to problems of geometry and analysis. The author illustrates concepts with simple examples and includes the proofs originally given by the discoverers of important theorems when such proofs are consistent with the introductory level of the course. This method of presentation reduces the abstract nature of algebraic topology to a level that is appropriate for the beginning student and provides motivation and cohesion often lacking in abstract treatments. The book contains an extensive bibliography of books and papers of both current and historical interest.'' (MathSciNet)
