In his preface the author tells us that he has written this book because of his strong belief that there should be readily available a semi-historical and geometrically motivated exposition of J. H. C. Whitehead's beautiful theory of simple homotopy types. Any who do not share his belief are likely to be at once converted on reading this book, and those who have grappled with the ideas developed in Whitehead's papers must be grateful for the illumination that is cast on the subject by this clearly written and definitive account.
