The book contains a survey of the history, nature and methods of solving optimization problems. The author uses a popular form for the exposition, mostly without proofs. The book is primarily addressed to students and teachers of mathematics. It is divided into two parts. The first part consists of ancient problems, posed and solved, as a rule, before the invention of the first general methods. In the second part some of the methods of the theory of extremal problems are discussed (the Lagrange multiplier rule, the calculus of variation, the elements of convex analysis and the Pontryagin maximum principle for problems of optimal control).
