The book provides an introduction to the algebra behind the words "quantum groups'' with emphasis on the fascinating and spectacular connections with low-dimensional topology and on Drinfelʹd's fundamental contribution. Despite the complexity of the subject the author makes the exposition accessible to a large audience. The book does not seek to address the problem of mentioning all the various aspects of quantum group theory. But, starting with elementary considerations, the author leads the reader to selected advanced results, providing detailed proofs of all necessary facts. A great many exercises are proposed to the diligent reader. Bibliographical and historical notes are not extensive but are very convenient for the beginner. (MathSciNet)
