This book is directed to second-year graduate students who have had a modest preparation in algebra and a stronger one in topology. On the one hand, the reader needs to know a little group theory and a little about rings and modules; on the other, he needs to know something about the fundamental group, covering spaces, simplicial and CW complexes, and homology theory as far as the Künneth and universal coefficient theorems. Beyond these prerequisites, students attempting to work past the first six chapters of this book will probably find it helpful to consult their local guru or one of the "classical'' treatises on homological algebra for more information on spectral sequences and their easier applications. Otherwise, this is an affordable, well-planned book which aims to offer the student an overview and an efficient entry into the study of discrete groups by cohomological methods. The exercises develop alternative proofs, supplementary techniques, and deeper examples and contribute to the impression that this book is a superb book to learn from. (MathSciNet)
