The author very skillfully utilizes techniques in the classical theory of equations to give a well-motivated and natural introduction to Galois theory. Equations of degree 3 and 4 are treated in great detail and many other examples are given including the 5th, 7th and 17th roots of unity. In addition, the exercises are well chosen and give an excellent complement to the text. The author avoids problems of inseparability by staying, for the most part, in characteristic zero. - This book is must reading for anyone wanting a solid and well-motivated introduction to Galois theory.
